On a parallel track, Bhairav (John Abraham), a taxi driver and part-time zoo employee, falls in love with Rasika (Disha Patani), a sales clerk at a retail store. Their love story comes to a halt when Bhairav discovers a shocking side of Rasika. At present, a serial killer is being searched in the city. This is especially for girls in unrequited love. A policeman describes him to onlookers, saying, “He wants to be the messiah of broken lovers.” The rest of the film revolves around discovering the identity of this smiling-faced killer in a country where “heroes don’t exist”. Looks like we’ve come a long way in the story.

Considered a spiritual successor to his 2014 film Ek Villain, the sequel is heartbreaking, absurd and psychological. Of course, you don’t just need a bad story to make a bad movie. When it comes to Villain Returns there is a lot more to contribute to the end result. Boring writing, lazy direction, half-baked characters and poorly conceived twists all combine to make for an exciting thriller rather than a boring watch.

Gautam (Kapoor) is a spoiled rich boy who has a love-hate relationship with RV (Sutriya), who is mostly seen singing on the open-air theater concert stage.

The 30-minute film still shows how Gautham and RV met and fell in love, took revenge, fell in love again, broke up, etc. The plot still lacks clarity. Even during Bhairav’s taxi journey, we see him only humor-obsessed and constantly in search of “appreciation”. But why? Why doesn’t he see her evil intentions? Why doesn’t Gautham tell RV that he loves her? Why should this villain pay the price without a missing lover? Why is Mohit Suri making a simple script for no reason? Why don’t most of our questions get answered on time?

This 128-minute film thankfully isn’t overly long, but you can read the story for as many hours as you want, but you’ll want it to pick up the pace and tell you what really happened. Additionally, the non-linear story style proves frustrating, as the appearance of these characters rarely changes. So it gets more confusing with each flashback.
Performance-wise, I didn’t expect much from Sutaria and Patni anyway, as they are only used as props to give the men an agenda in their lives and dictate their actions. His character never changes. My wife’s crooked laugh bothers me a lot and gives me headache. Sutriya tries hard, but the script can do whatever it wants.

For me, Abraham turned out to be an amazing casting for the role as he was expected to deliver a great performance. A villain returns who locks her in a box and won’t let her go. To be honest, I can’t remember the last time an Abraham film had so few lines. After all, there is also a chance to take the cake by shining camphor.
There are certain shades of his character that you can identify with. Actor JD Chakraborty in the supporting cast and Shaad Ali as the cop get so little chance to act that you feel bad for them. They appear and disappear in the story at the will and imagination of the director.
Note that the soulful song Teri Gallion has been recreated as Gallion Returns and plays in the background throughout the film. The rest of the album is forgettable and falls short of expectations.
To make a long story short, by the end of this you will wish that this villain never returns. Of course, who would have thought such a script would work better today than its predecessor? Ek Villain Returns is in theaters now. Watch this only if you can resist a so-called immersive movie that will hopefully put your mind at ease.
